The earliest European gold is found in the Bulgarian lands from the ancient Thracians. It dates back to seven thousand years in the past. Around the I st millennia B.C. the Thracians formed about 90 different communities which historians provisionally call tribes. From IV c. B.C. Tere Ist unites some of these tribes, forming the Odrysian kingdom. In the next centuries the Odrysian dynasty begins to amass treasures of artistically made objects. The objects are made by masters of different nationality but have all been used for the Thracian royal economy. In the ancient times on the territory of present-day Bulgaria have been located the first and richest gold and silver mines on the continent. The oldest preserved gold mine is situated by the village of Stremtzi. More than 500 galleries and about 10 entrances from it are preserved. With it is connected the most precious Byzantine coin of the Middle Ages - the 22 karate "hyperon", or more famous as "pipera" - from the name of the sacred Thracian town of Perperikon. Perperikon lies at a distance of 2 km from the mine.

The selection of the represented treasures is determined not from the glory or the weight of the precious metal but from the desire to illustrate the main beliefs of the Thracians.
