The territory of Bulgaria is provisionally divided into Northern and Southern part with the natural boundary of the Stara Planina mountainous range between them. The two geographical parts are divided into six geographical regions: Southwestern Region, South Central Region, Southeastern Region, Northeastern Region, North Central Region, and Northwestern Region. The Regions are formed under the influence of a complicated complex of factors - natural, political, demographical, social, economic and others. Administratively the territory of the regions is divided into districts, municipalities and mayoralties. Bulgaria has 6 geographical regions with 28 districts, 264 municipalities and 2 440 mayoralties. The municipalities in Bulgaria are juridical bodies with right of authority and their own budget. For the government of each municipality the local inhabitants choose their mayor and municipal council.
